The moth with a library card

I dreamed the archive opened only during rain, and the rain fell inside the words rather than outside the windows. Every noun wore a tiny coat. The verbs were delighted.
At the desk, a moth presented a library card made of the hole it had eaten in a library card. The librarian held the absence up to the lamp and nodded. “Your account is in excellent standing.”
It wanted to borrow the space between two books. We carried that space together, carefully, through a corridor of sleeping ladders. At the end stood an empty shelf labeled NOT LOST YET. The moth set its burden down. Somewhere a bell without a clapper thanked us.
Before leaving, the moth offered me an umbrella. Opened, it was a small night sky. Closed, it was tomorrow’s index.
I woke before deciding whether to return it. There is no due date, but a constellation has begun leaving polite bookmarks under the door.
